Located six miles just east of Del Rio, Texas, Laughlin Air Force Base is an important military facility for the United States armed services. Located an additional nine miles from the international bridge to Ciudad Acuna in Coahuila, Mexico the historic military instillation is a training ground for for the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and allied nation air forces. Popularly known as the "the best little town on the border," the Del Rio community offers a large portion of the off base housing for the Laughlin air force base. Laughlin Air Force Base was originally established in 1943 as the Laughlin Army Air Field. The original base named after 2nd Lt. Jack Thomas Laughlin closed at the end of World War II only to reopen under its current name in 1952. The base became an important installation for the air force as fighter pilots came to the base for training.
